A 68-year-old woman presents with fever and jaundice for two days and pain in the right upper abdomen for five days. No other symptoms are present. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus three months ago, which is well controlled on lifestyle changes and oral metformin 850 mg once daily. Her medical and surgical histories are otherwise unremarkable. She is not on any other medications. She does not smoke, and only drinks socially. There is no history of recent travel.
