A 6-year-old girl comes to the physician because her parents are concerned that she is short. They first became concerned during preschool, when she was remarkably shorter than her peers. She has just completed kindergarten, where she was often teased about her height and called names like “shorty.” Her mother is 170 cm tall, her father is 180 cm tall, and the parents cannot recall anyone in the extended family with below-average height. Although she achieved early developmental milestones on time, she struggled academically in kindergarten and will be repeating the year.
